Fridays @8pm / Saturdays @4pm & @8pm / Sundays @2pm. Additional 8pm performance on Saturday 28 April.
Drawing on the ‘local color’ tales of writer, paintr, carver and boat builder, George Savary Wasson, Pontine Theatre brings the salt-crusted denizens of Killick Cove to the stage. Wasson’s stories, published as Cap’n Simerion’s Store, Home From Sea, and The Green Shay, are based upon his neighbors and acquainances in Kittery Point, Maine, circa 1900. These stories of the elder generation of deep-sea fishermen are told in their own dialect; sitting around the hospitable fire of Cap’n Simeon’s Store, they spin their yarns of shipwrecks and storms, ghosts and witchcraft, the insufferable summer “rusticators,” and life and death on the great deep.

Govt Affairs
This Friday, May 4th, the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Government Affairs Committee meeting (8 am, Seacoast Media Group, 111 New Hampshire Ave., Portsmouth, NH ). This month, we'll get into some political analysis, as we prepare to enter the 2012 election season. Specifically, I'll be leading an analysis and discussion of what the new State Senate districts will mean for the fall elections - there have been some significant changes in the districts, especially here on the Seacoast. There are incumbents retiring left and right (six of 24 have already announced they won't be running in 2012), and I've done detailed analysis of what we should expect in 2012, including the partisan voting patterns of these newly-drawn districts, who will or may run, and how the outcome will impact policy in 2013. Maps, statistics, PowerPoint, a little rumor mongering, coffee and munchkins - come this Friday, and be informed and entertained!

The NHTP Senior Repertory Company presents Antigone, a translation by Lewis Galantiere from the play by Jean Anouilh, which was adapted from the original Greek play by Sophocles. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, is sentenced to execution for burying her dead brother after her uncle, King Creon, declares that his body is to be left for the vultures. The prohibition against desecrating the dead is almost as old as war itself; and recently brought swift punishment to American Marines in Afghanistan.
Anouilh’s version of Antigone was first performed in Paris in 1944 during the German occupation. Produced under censorship, the play is clearly a metaphor for the French Resistance movement and its rejection of fascist authority. NHTP artistic director Genevieve Aichele has chosen to set the play in an imaginary occupied land, where the resistance fighters in hiding dare to put on a play about undermining totalitarian authority. In preparation for this production, Senior Repertory Company members studied the original Greek tragedy, as well as the French resistance movement and contemporary rebels like the Occupy movement. As the final Chorus states, the cause of “Antigones” is always the same: a passionate regard for the sanctity of human dignity.
Other artists involved in the production are assistant director/stage manager Robin Fowler, costume designer Maura Suter, and set/lighting designer Meghann Beauchamp.
Antigone is generously sponsored by Avery Insurance Agency, Diverse Networks LLC, and Flatbread Company.
