Walk the streets of Portsmouth just like George Washington. During his visit in 1789, Washington took tea with his secretary's mother, Mrs. Lear, attended Mass at St. John's Church, and was feted at a reception at the Langdon House. This tour traces his footsteps from the Langdon House, past his lodging, the church sites where he worshipped, the waterfront he observed, and the house of a special family meeting. The tour returns to the Langdon House, where you can use your ticket for a half-priced house tour. $6 Historic New England members, $12 nonmembers.

“COLONIAL COOKING MADE NEW” AT CALPHALON
What: A three-part FREE series , entitled “Colonial Recipes – Modern Methods” will be presented at the Calphalon store located at Kittery Premium Outlets (4) in Kittery, Maine.

Calphalon and the York Museum’s Education Program will show you how easy and tasty it can be to bring back these old favorites.
Using Calphalon’s state of the art cookware and a historical interpreter channeling an 18th Century lady, attendees will learn how to make original 18th Century New England Recipes such as Gingerbread, Bread Pudding, Indian Slapjacks and Corn Bread by converting measurements used in colonial days and replacing some traditional ingredients with modern substitutes. The Portsmouth Historical Society is sponsoring an illustrated lecture on July 29 at 5:30 PM by Thomas Hardiman, Keeper of the Portsmouth Athenaeum, entitled “Joseph Greenleaf Cole and the Dawning of Art in Portsmouth.” The talk will be held at the Discover Portsmouth Center, 10 Middle Street, Portsmouth. While prominent Portsmouth residents were painted in the 18th century by well-known artists such as Joseph Blackburn and John Singleton Copely, those of the early to mid-nineteenth century turned to artists who advertised in the Portsmouth newspapers—chief among them Joseph Greenleaf Cole (1806-1858). Five portraits by Cole are included in the current exhibition at the John Paul Jones House, “Brooches, Caps and Collars: Adornment in Portsmouth Portraits 1800-1860.” Tom will discuss how Joseph Greenleaf Cole, who spent most of his life in Massachusetts as well as a few years in Portland Maine, came to paint so many portraits in Portsmouth. While Cole does not have the fame of a Blackburn or Copely, he painted as many portraits in Portsmouth in two years as had been painted in the previous 100 years! Please join us to find out why Joseph Greenleaf Cole had so much business in Portsmouth. For more information please contact Sandra Rux 436-8420 or info@portsmouthhistory.org.
