PORTSMOUTH, N.H., April 20, 2018 3S Artspace and Fukudance present a special preview performance of RE:main Saturday, June 9 at 8pm at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, NH. The Re:main preview seeks to inspire self empowerment through contemporary dance by reflecting on contemporary issues as a community. In particular, RE:main is a cathartic exploration of one’s feelings of powerlessness amidst unjust and controlling forces in society.

The performers’ movement is born out of feedback gathered in several interactive workshops hosted by Fukudance’s director and choreographer, Junichi Fukuda. Open to those with feelings of otherness, exclusion, and disenfranchisement, particularly teenagers, the workshops provided a sharing medium for stories of their experience with injustices.

During the workshops held at 3S Artspace, Junichi collected stories with a range of types and manner of injustice, and certain themes jumped out, repeating from person to person. “I noticed a strong pattern of experiences surrounding racial, financial, and gender inequalities and the pool of frustration that comes alongside it,” Junichi said.

Influenced by the sense of futility found in the Japanese concept of Karoshi (death by overwork), RE:main delivers visceral storytelling through dance of the conflict between individual desires and societal expectations. First showing physical restrictive encasement and articulating the invisible forces of Karoshi, the performers do find balance, transitioning into an awakening and subsequent realization of one’s complete and true potential.

3S Artspace collaborates regularly with Junichi in its programming, fully supporting the process and subject matter of projects such as RE:main. With desire to present this work and grow the contemporary dance audience in the Seacoast area, 3S pursued and was subsequently awarded funding from the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts to host the preview.

“The projects we work on with Junichi are so special in that each one encourages the unusual and groundbreaking intersection of contemporary dance with things like an art exhibit on the Gallery walls in our Second Eye series, or with community members for RE:main, translating their experiences into movement,” said Beth Falconer, Executive Director of 3S Artspace.

The preview of RE:main will feature about six Fukudance performers, including Junichi himself, and  the voiceover of actress Catherine Stewart, taking on the role of retelling stories gathered in the RE:main workshops.

The Fukudance company creates work from a belief in the necessity of live performance and the experience of art to convey humanity. Guided by the artistic vision of Junichi, the company aims to build a wide audience through virtuosic, unique collaborations and engaging performances including that of RE:main at 3S Artspace.

“My hope for RE:main is for it to be the starting point, the connecting point for the community to become aware of how people outside their familiar circles are thinking and feeling and being marginalized,” Junichi said. “There is inequality everywhere-- in us, near us, and far from us. I want RE:main to be a place to share what others are going through, and through that awareness, I hope to inspire change.”
