COAST Celebrates 35 Years on the Road

If you’re a resident of Seacoast NH, chances are you’ve passed more than a few COAST vehicles on the road over the years. You may have even taken one of our trolleys to navigate through downtown Portsmouth, or commuted to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on one of our Express Commuter Routes.

COAST plays a vital role in helping to move the Seacoast. Passengers utilize our services to commute to work or school, access grocery stores and doctors’ appointments, or visit with family and friends. For some passengers the bus is a great way to save money on transportation costs and reduce their carbon footprint, for other passengers the bus is the only transportation option available.

The Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST) has come a long way since its inception in 1982; evolving from a transportation brokerage with three employees that contracted out all services, to a fully functioning modernized public transportation system with a staff of 75 and a fleet of over 40 vehicles. COAST will proudly carry our 14 millionth passenger in early June.

COAST is very grateful to its passengers, member communities, partner agencies, and dedicated staff for helping us reach our 35th anniversary. We are honored to serve you and we look forward to the opportunity to continually improve our services in the years to come.

In honor of this milestone achievement, COAST is taking the opportunity to not just reflect on how far the organization has come, but to also look to the future with a clear and focused vision for further development and growth.

In 2016, COAST staff and board members came together to develop an organization-wide Strategic Plan that will help steer COAST into a successful future. Part of the planning process involved the creation of a set of guiding principles, core values, manageable goals to propel the organization forward, and a brand new mission statement:

At COAST, our mission is to champion and provide customer-focused public transportation with a commitment to excellence in safety and service.

“It was an incredibly re-energizing process. The organization is very proud of the restated mission, new goals, values, and vision,” reflected COAST Executive Director, Rad Nichols. “As the COAST leadership team rolled the Strategic Plan document out internally, there was a renewed sense of pride for being part of an organization that truly improves the quality of life for the region’s residents, employees, employers, and visitors.” Mr. Nichols, who celebrated his 20th year working at COAST in 2016, has been the Executive Director of the organization since 2007.

COAST is overseen by a Board of Directors whose members represent the communities served by COAST, as well as various local, regional, and statewide organizations that recognize the importance of public transportation for their employees and consumers, or have other connections to the organization. COAST is one of the only truly regional public transit systems in the state of NH, and is funded through federal and local public funds, along with farebox and advertising revenues.
