The Granite YMCA is pleased to announce the appointment of John M. Harris as its new President and CEO.

“We’re thrilled to bring John aboard as our new leader,” said Denise B. Langley, board chair for The Granite YMCA.  “He brings a broad and deep range of skills and talents to this position and we strongly feel that he is the right person to help our YMCA continue to move forward.”

Chosen after a nation-wide search, Mr. Harris joins The Granite YMCA from the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, where he has served as Vice President of Branch Operations since 2006.  In that role, he led five urban and suburban branches which served 25,000 members and 2,500 community participants.  He also oversaw two camp properties, which served more than 2,800 day and overnight campers.  Additionally, he created a wellness partnership with a local healthcare provider, which serves 1,000 employees and patients.

Prior to joining the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, Mr. Harris was the Regional Vice President of Midtown Athletic Clubs in Chicago, IL where he managed health and wellness partnerships with major healthcare systems aimed at helping employers lower healthcare costs and better manage chronic disease.  Mr. Harris also held leadership positions at The Wellbridge Company in Boston, MA, the Health Development Corporation in Wakefield, MA, the Flatley Company in Braintree, MA and Fitcorp Healthcare Centers in Boston, MA.

Mr. Harris is replacing Hal Jordan, who is retiring from The Granite YMCA after 28 years at the helm.  “Hal has been a true visionary in growing our organization and furthering our cause,” noted Ms. Langley.  “We can’t thank him enough for his numerous contributions and tireless work on behalf of those we serve.”

Mr. Harris graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Fitness.  He holds numerous professional certifications.

“I’m very much looking forward to joining The Granite YMCA and getting to know our community,” said Mr. Harris.  “This is an amazing opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”

His appointment was effect on February 22.
