PORTSMOUTH – The New Hampshire Art Association offers an exhibit titled, “Looking Beyond,” featuring the work of alternatively abled artists during the month of January at its Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.
This is an educational partnership between the NHAA and One Sky Community Services of Portsmouth, an organization that encourages developmentally challenged adults to create, exhibit and sell their artwork.
The collaboration is based on the philosophy that art is a “language” that communicates with people in many ways.
In January 2018, One Sky artists were invited to partner with NHAA in displaying and selling their handmade jewelry and original art. The success of that exhibit led to a series of art classes conducted by member/mentor NHAA artists for One Sky participants.
Some of the students’ works are included in the upcoming exhibit. NHAA board member and teacher Barbara Albert taught the classes, which explored a variety of art media and techniques. She was impressed by the creativity and originality of the student’s work.
Grant funding is being sought to support continuing classes in 2019.
“Looking Beyond” will feature the work of 10 to 12 artists who will show and sell their pieces in January. A reception for family, friends and the public will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, from 1-3 p.m., at the Levy Gallery on State Street.
