Call for entries--40th annual Parfitt juried photography exhibition
PORTSMOUTH – The New Hampshire Art Association is accepting online submissions beginning May 20 through June 23 for the 40thannual Jack Parfitt open juried photography exhibition.
The exhibit is open to NHAA members and area artists and works chosen will be on display at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery from July 31 through Sept. 1. One or two pieces can be submitted.
This year’s juror is Iaritza Menjivar, a documentary photographer and associate director at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachusetts.
Menjivar’s project, “First Generation,” was published in the New York Times Lensblog. She has received a St. Botolph Foundation Emerging Artist Grand and has recently been awarded a full scholarship for a three-year Advanced Mentored Study Program for Visual Storytelling and Documentary Projects with Ed Kashi from VII Photo and James Estrin from the New York Times Lens.
Menjivar has been a teaching assistant and co-instructor for Stella Johnson’s photography workshop “Documenting Village Life,” Oaxaca, Mexico, for Lesley University and Maine Media Workshops.
Recently, Menjivar has exhibited in various group shows, including, Crossing Borders at the Boston Arts Academy in Boston and the Emerge-Cubes at Photoville in New York City.
Menjivar’s long-term project, “First Generation,” documents the consequences of immigration and the first generation of children of Latino immigrants
Jack Parfitt was an active in his community as well as being an adventurer and expert photographer who spent his last 12 years traveling extensively. His travels included Russia, China, Afghanistan, Morocco and Iceland and Africa.
Parfitt was given unheard of permission to photograph the Great Wall of China. He shared his art with the community and state by composing a series of slides and lecture presentations.
He was a board member of the N.H. Art Association and there is a juried memorial art exhibit in his name every year.
