Prescott Park Arts Festival Announces Their 2017 Concert Series Line Up

Portsmouth NH – The much anticipated reveal of the Prescott Park Arts Festival’s 2017 River House Restaurant Concert Series lineup was announced to the public this Tuesday, May 2nd. The summer concert series has become a well-known and distinguished tradition on the seacoast, featuring nationally touring musical acts from a range of genres in a picturesque outdoor setting along the Piscataqua River, all on a suggested donation basis.

The Festival, a local non-profit arts organization, is preparing to celebrate its 43rd season in the park this summer.  As in years past, the Festival plans to once again welcome an all-star lineup of acclaimed artists to the Seacoast’s stage including a historic collaboration between Blues titans Taj Mahal & Keb Mo, the long requested return of Lake Street Drive, and new acts to the park, Iron & Wine, Aimee Mann, Kurt Vile, Conor Oberst and the New Pornographers. In addition to the acts revealed, the Festival hinted they have more acts that can’t be announced until mid-June.

“The season reveal is one of my favorite times of year, hands down. It means warm summer nights and a sea of smiling faces are right around the corner,” described festival President, Ben Anderson. “We feel blessed to be able to have the opportunity to offer our community with access to such stellar acts like what we’ve put together this year. Absolutely everyone can enjoy this incredibly dynamic and vibrant season. That’s such a special and unique part of our community.”

Founded in 1974, the festival has continued to offer its events on a donation-only basis, having raised the optional suggested donation amount only once in the early 1980s from $3 to the current amount of $5 and $8.

“We live in a world of change,” explained Anderson, “but the Festival has held true to its core mission for more than four decades. It’s something we can all take great pride in.”

With no fixed admission, the Festival has still found success in providing high caliber acts to the local community and its visitors.

Leading off the star-studded season, Lake Street Dive returns to the park featuring Suitcase Junket on Sunday, June 18th. Having recently debuting their album, Side Pony, Lake Street Dive will once again grace the Wilcox Main Stage at Prescott Park with their unique and charismatic southern rock, indie pop, soul, jazz, folk rock, and Motown medleys. “We’re very excited to bring back LSD. It’s hard to believe they were once one of our ‘discovery acts’, and we’re delighted to feature them as the season kick-off.”

Returning favorites aren’t the only thing the Festival has in store for park goers this summer. Iron & Wine will join the roster of singer songwriters on Wednesday, June 28th. Sam Ervin Beam, an American singer-songwriter is Iron & Wine- a name he coined using a vitamin label found while shooting a film in a general store years before his musical success. Beam, a South Carolina native, will bring his soul drenched folk vocals to life for what will prove to be an awe inspiring performance.

New to the Portsmouth scene, but no stranger to musical fame- Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning singer Aimee Mann will perform the park on Friday, June 30th.  Having just released her newest album, Mental Illness, Mann touts the praises of critics worthy of a listen. With her finger picking style inspired by some of her favorite 60’s and 70’s folk rock records, Mann brings her haunting sound to life, and to the waterfront, for all to enjoy.

Soon after, folk/pop singer-songwriter Brett Dennen returns to the Main Stage on Wednesday, August 9th.  Dennen took the musical scene by storm in 2004 and was named by Rolling Stone Magazine as an “Artist to Watch”. Critics compare his soul drenched crooning to greats such as Bob Dylan, James Taylor and Tracy Chapman.

Returning to the park this season is legendary blues musician Taj Mahal, on Wednesday, August 16th. The beloved performer has been a favorite of the Seacoast, young and old, this self-taught singer-songwriter who plays the guitar, piano, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments) has reformed the meaning of blues music over the course of his almost 50-year career. Two time Grammy winning, Taj Mahal is known for his incorporation of elements of world music into his work.
Joining Taj is three-time American Grammy Award-winning blues musician Keb Mo. Mo, whose post-modern blues style is influenced by many eras and genres, including folk, rock, jazz and pop, boasts 15 albums to date. Mo is known to partner and perform alongside musical acts such as Peter Maffay, and Dan Aykroyd.
