In celebration of Earth Day, Star Island is hosting a lecture by local legend and environmentalist, Dudley W. Dudley. In 1973 Dudley and local activists led a citizen’s revolt to halt the plans of Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis who was intent on building the world's largest oil refinery on the shores of Great Bay and turning the Isles of Shoals into a super-port. At the time, Dudley was a 37-year-old mother of two and a state representative from Durham. She and other seacoast citizens led the charge against the destructive project, an inspirational tale of local citizens making a stand for the preservation of their community and environment. Dudley’s story, relevant now more than ever, is a reminder not only of the importance of preservation and care of our coast, but what ordinary citizens can accomplish together. Join us to hear her inspiring tale!
