PORTSMOUTH, NH: Valerie's Gallery in Portsmouth, N.H. will be participating in the city’s upcoming Art 'Round Town by featuring an artist visit and demonstration by printmaker Matt Brown on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 5-8 pm at the gallery, located at 117 Market Street in Portsmouth, NH. In the 1990s Brown left his job as a carpenter and cabinet to become a full-time print maker, first experimenting with the Japanese hanga method in 1992. Multiple woodblock print was developed in Japan during the 19th century with the technique first being practiced in the United States by artist Arthur Dow and others. “Matt prints using pure pigments, water, and rice paste and uses a hand-held baren to apply pressure on the paper which has been laid on top of each inked woodblock carving,” says Valerie Stainton, owner of Valerie’s Gallery. “Because he doesn't use a large printing press, he's able to do a demonstration during his gallery visit. We hope you'll join us.” Valerie's Gallery is a art gallery and fine craft shop with two locations, in Portsmouth, NH and Newburyport, MA. Since 2002, it has showcased functional and decorative hand-crafted artful objects by 100 American artists, mostly from New England, featuring artisan jewelry, functional pottery and original artwork by local artists.
