41st annual Parfitt juried photography exhibition - Call for Art at NH Art Association
PORTSMOUTH – The New Hampshire Art Association will have 80 stunning photography images on view in its gallery from Aug. 5 through Aug. 30 during the 41st annual Jack Parfitt juried exhibition.
Also, for the first time in the Association’s history, the entire Parfitt exhibit will be online for those who can’t make it to the gallery on State Street.
“Because we can’t have our usual opening reception due to the coronavirus, we will be having an online reception on Aug. 7 at 6 p.m.,” said Renee Giffroy, NHAA board president. “The prize winners will be announced at that time.”
Those interested in attending the virtual reception can call the gallery for more information at 603-431-4230.
This year’s juror is photographer Don Toothaker, Director of Photography Adventures at Hunts Photo and Video, who chose the 80 pieces that were submitted by both NHAA members and non-members.
Toothaker has been professionally photographing a variety of subjects for the past 20 years while teaching others to do so as well. As the Director of Photographer Adventures for Hunts Photo and Video in Massachusetts, Toothaker leads instructional photo walks in the greater Boston area and holds photography workshops locally, nationally, and internationally.
He is deeply committed to sharing the beauty of the world through his imagery, his writing, and instructing.
"I am never trying to take a picture of something,” Toothaker said. “I will be forever trying to capture an image of how I feel about something."
There are first, second, and third place awards and three honorable mentions with prizes donated by Image Arts in Portsmouth, Don Toothacker, and NHAA.
The first-place winner will receive a package from Toothaker that includes a private photo shoot session and a critique of images. Second place will receive a gift certificate to Image Arts.
This annual exhibit was named in honor of Jack Parfitt, former NHAA Board member, who was active in his community as well as being an adventurer and expert photographer. He spent his last 12 years traveling extensively to Russia, China, Afghanistan, Morocco, Iceland and Africa and was granted unheard of permission to photograph the Great Wall of China.
“We are excited to present the high quality of photographs we received this year,” said MaryAnn DePolo, gallery manager. “Also, we are celebrating the Association’s 80th year. The Parfitt exhibit has been a part of our history for almost half that time.”
The gallery is following the CDC and state’s recommendations for safety while visiting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Call 603-431-4320 if you have any questions.
