PORTSMOUTH — The Players’ Ring and 3S Artspace announce the New England premiere of Tarrytown, a modern retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with book, music, and lyrics by Adam Wachter. The musical will hold six performances at 3S Artspace: June 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and June 20 and 27 at 2 p.m.

Under the direction of Matthew Zielonko, the story unfolds from the perspective of Ichabod Crane (played by Trevor Gatcomb), a new music teacher in town who befriends the principal’s assistant, Katrina (played by Marina Altschiller), and falls in love with her husband, a history teacher named Brom (played by David Reichert).

This presentation marks the first collaboration between 3S Artspace and The Players’ Ring.

“The Players’ Ring, like 3S, had to temporarily close their performance space during the pandemic. Capacity restrictions make it impossible for us to operate with events geared toward larger audiences, but our space transforms beautifully into a black-box theatre,” said Beth Falconer, Executive Director of 3S Artspace. “Following their application to our Community Grant Program, Margherita Giacobbi [Head of Production at the Players’ Ring] and I had a chance to connect, and we knew how hard it would be to miss another summer of theatre. We both felt there was great synergy and excitement to work together, and we are grateful for yet another chance to create a ‘silver lining’ to the recent challenges. We are so ready to welcome a live audience to these performances!”

“When the opportunity for this collaboration presented itself, we immediately knew we also wanted to involve Dive In Productions. They are a group of talented and committed artists, who’ve been supporting our mission for years. They enthusiastically suggested Tarrytown, and we loved the idea of a contemporary take on such a popular tale. On the production side, the small cast of 3 makes it a great title to welcome our audiences back to live musical theatre. Marina, Trevor and David are great performers and we are sure they will beautifully convey this fun, intense and tuneful story,” said Matthew Parent, Executive Director of the Players’ Ring.

Tarrytown marks the beginning of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Players' Ring’s as well as the start of the theatre’s first company in residence: Dive In Productions.

“At the Ring, we are working hard to establish and re-establish meaningful relationships with the local artistic community. The Company in Residence program is a way to do exactly this: working closely with various groups in order to achieve great creative freedom and quality and to support each other in the process. During their 2-year tenure, our first resident company, Dive In, will help us develop this program that we hope will engage many different groups of artists,” said Ed Simeone, Chair of the Artistic Committee at the Players’ Ring.

Audiences attending a performance can expect cabaret-style seating at a reduced capacity in the Performance Space at 3S Artspace, as well as the newly completed replacement of the HVAC system and installation of iWave ionizer technology throughout the building.

“Guest and staff safety continues to be our top priority and the upgrades provide a safer environment for visitors to enjoy the music, art, and theatre experiences 3S has to offer our Seacoast community and its visitors,” said Beth Falconer, Executive Director of 3S Artspace.

The collaboration between Players’ Ring and 3S Artspace emerged as a solution to performance restrictions faced by both venues, providing a way to offer mutual support and raise funds for both organizations.

“Needless to say, the past year has been a tough one for performing arts. After a short and brave attempt at reopening last fall, we opted for a complete hiatus and chose to invest significant resources and energies into some important renovations while planning the upcoming Season, our 30th! Being able to present a live theatre performance this summer with a cool partner like 3S is truly exciting,” said Margherita Giacobbi, Head of Production at the Players’ Ring. “We are very grateful for this opportunity, which proves that - if something good can come out of this incredible challenge - it’s the ability of cultural organizations to support each other.”
