“Transformations: Nature and Beyond” at New Hampshire Art Association
PORTSMOUTH – The images in William Townsend’s exhibit, “Transformations: Nature and Beyond,” began as photographs of natural objects. They will be on display at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery during September.
“The photographs serve as the primary material for the transformations of line, form and color through the use of digital tools and techniques,” Townsend said.
Townsend describes his process as one of constantly “seeing into” the image and spontaneously following where each transformation leads until the image becomes “complete-in-itself.”
The digitally altered images are combined with the horizontally or vertically rotated version of the image. In several images the single panoramic image was again duplicated, rotated and combined with the original panorama.
In some images the flow of the combined parts have a swirling or cascading rhythm. In other images, a further alteration places the image within an oval shape as if looking at the image in a mirror. The areas in the images where the combined panoramas connect often form intricate geometric forms that reveal a mystical dimension at the center of the image.
Townsend has been creating photographic and digital art for many years. He is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association and the Plymouth Art Guild in Massachusetts. His work has appeared in numerous juried and personal exhibits and has received several awards.
