Wentworth-Douglass has been named the most racially inclusive hospital in the state of New Hampshire, according to a new index compiled by a nonpartisan think tank.

The Lown Institute examined more than 3,200 hospitals across the United States, measuring how well they serve people of color in their surrounding community. Hospitals were scored based on how the demographics of their community area compared to their patient population.

“At Wentworth-Douglass, we strive to treat every patient who walks through our doors with the same level of dignity, respect, and caring our organization is known for,” said Jeff Hughes, president and CEO of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

“I’m grateful for this recognition, and along with our nearly 3,500 employees, remain committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and acceptance for everyone,” he said.

The Lown Institute Hospitals Index is their first ranking to examining racial inclusivity. The institute created a metric based on Medicare and U.S. Census Bureau data from 2018.

Wentworth-Douglass, and its partner Mass General Brigham, have made diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) a system-wide priority. The hospital has implemented DE&I training, committees, and other initiatives that promote racial equity.

“I recognize there’s much more work to be done, and Wentworth-Douglass is committed to being at the forefront of it,” Hughes said.
