The Bus Stop centers around the lives of five black women who although are very different, each have one thing in common, a loved one who is incarcerated. Although these women have varying backgrounds, meeting at the bus stop and forming a relationship with each other changes their lives forever. The effects that incarceration has on the black community are not a foreign concept for the playwright, as his own father was incarcerated for the majority of his childhood. Najee saw firsthand the effect that having an incarcerated father had on his mom, and drew a lot of inspiration from her in writing this script. When writing The Bus Stop, playwright, producer and director Najee Brown “wanted to show the effects that the prison system has not just on the black male but the black woman who is often left behind.” The Bus Stop uses the power of live theater to show the effects of the prison system on people in ways that lectures and conversation alone can’t do.
