Get out your hankies. In this tear jerker, Barbara Stanwyck plays the daughter of a mill worker who wants to better her lot in life. She sets her sights on an ambitious businessman, marries him, then sacrifices it all for the love of her daughter. Expertly directed by King Vidor, Stanwyck was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her realistic, nuanced performance. Originally, Samuel Goldwyn did not want to cast Stanwyck in the title role, saying that she didn’t have enough sex appeal. He relented after seeing her screen test, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the title role. This is Barbara Stanwyck at the top of her game!

About The Film Club
Join us for The Music Hall Film Club! Over the course of six months, we’ll be focusing on a particular outstanding director, genre, or artist. On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, we’ll show a film followed by a lively, participatory discussion. Curators Bill and Stella Pence, founders of the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and the Music Hall’s Telluride by the Sea Film Festival, have chosen Barbara Stanwyck and the Six Giant Directors for January through June 2017! Susan Poulin, award winning writer, performer and a great lover of Cinema, will be our host and guide.
A must for all Telluride lovers, film discussion buffs, and all-around cinephiles!
