Secrets, Scalawags & Spirits of the Isles of Shoals Tales of pirates, ethereal maidens and elusive ghost ships have long graced the Isles of Shoals with an aura of mystery, romance and a touch of the macabre. Poet Celia Thaxter chronicled these tales in her classically 19th century style which greatly enhanced these stories and thus, the allure of these captivating islands. Presented here are nearly factual and highly imaginative versions of the Shoals most infamous legends, along with Celia’s little-known ghostly protest poem.
