The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire promotes awareness and appreciation of African American history and life in order to build more inclusive communities today. BHTNH works to visibly honor and share a truer, more inclusive history through exhibits, educational programs, curriculum development, and tours that can change the way our country understands human dignity when it is free of historical stereotypes. Position Overview. The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH) is seeking a creative, driven, and organized Marketing Specialist to join our growing team. This position plays a key role in amplifying the organization's mission to promote awareness and appreciation of African American history and culture in New Hampshire through educational programs, community events, and public engagement.
The Marketing Specialist will be responsible for the development and implementation of integrated marketing strategies that raise the visibility of the organization’s mission events and programs with culturally appropriate, cohesive, cross-channel messaging. The Marketing Specialist manages social media accounts, creates promotional materials in conjunction with staff and/or vendors, manages the BHTNH website, including content and updates, and analyzes marketing data to measure the success of marketing efforts and for reporting outcomes.
The ideal candidate should be a self-starter, possess excellent communication and project management skills, and have a passion for social justice and community engagement.
This is a full-time (40-hour per week, some evenings and weekends required) position that reports to the senior Program Director of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing & Communications
- Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan to promote BHTNH programs, events, and campaigns.
- Create compelling content (written and visual) for newsletters, flyers, press releases, and outreach materials.
- Maintain and update the organization’s website with current content, event pages, and news.
Social Media Marketing
- Manage and grow BHTNH’s presence across key social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.).
- Plan and schedule regular content, including posts, stories, and reels aligned with campaigns and programs.
- Monitor performance metrics and adjust strategies to improve reach, engagement, and follower growth.
- Respond to comments and inquiries to build community and brand loyalty.
Campaigns & Fundraising Support
- Support major campaigns such as NH Gives, Giving Tuesday, and Juneteenth with coordinated marketing materials and timelines.
- Work closely with the development team to create donor communications and fundraising appeals.
- Assist in designing and deploying email marketing campaigns via Constant Contact or similar platforms.
Event Promotion & Community Engagement
- Collaborate with program staff to design and implement promotional strategies for events such as the Tea Talk Series, Living History Tours, and community dialogues.
- Coordinate advertising, print collateral, and media partnerships.
- Capture and archive high-quality images and stories from events for future marketing use.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a marketing, communications, or social media role.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Proficiency in social media management tools (e.g., Later, Buffer, Hootsuite) and platforms.
- Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite) a plus.
- Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress), email marketing tools (e.g., Constant Contact), and Google Analytics.
- Passion for African American history, social justice, and community storytelling.
