  • New Hampshire Theatre Project Launches new series of Play Readings for Grown-Ups’with 'Morning’s at Seven'

PORTSMOUTH - New Hampshire Theatre Project's all-new series of Play Readings for Grown-ups begins with Morning's at Seven by Paul Osborn.

Readings will be on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Each reading will be followed by a short audience talkback.

Morning’s at Seven focuses on four aging sisters living in a small Midwestern town in 1928 when two of them begin to question their lives and decide to make some changes before it’s too late. This perennially charming portrait of small town America received a lukewarm response when it was first produced on Broadway in 1939. It was a “quiet story about older people” that didn’t appeal to audiences at that pivotal time in history. But Morning’s at Seven was revived on Broadway in 1980 and in 2002 to critical acclaim, and received numerous awards.

The reading is directed by Genevieve Aichele, with Bill Humphreys as consulting director. Featured actors are Pam Battin-Sacks, John Bolduc, Peter Josephson, Leslie Pasternack, Kaytee Gagneux Prue, Robert Prue, Jim Sears, Kathleen Somssich and Colleen Spear.

Aichele says, “There is a magical charm infusing this play, dealing with simple everyday people dealing with simple everyday family relationships, that transcends time and period. Their stories are recognizable and perennial. The warm, quiet humor of the script is a delicious respite from contemporary high drama.”

NHTP’s Playreading For Grownups Series is sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Bank and Kathleen Somssich.
