Main Gallery Exhibition: Transcendence
PORTSMOUTH – This June, in celebration of Pride Month, the New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) proudly presents Transcendence, a regional exhibition that honors the spectrum of LGBTQIA+ experiences in New England. Featuring work in a wide range of media, the exhibition invites viewers into a deeply personal and collective exploration of queer identity. Participating artists—both emerging and established—engage with themes of authenticity, self-discovery, and acceptance, offering visual narratives that are as diverse as the community itself. From bold declarations to quiet reflections, each piece in Transcendence contributes to a larger chorus of voices seeking visibility.
For the third consecutive year, NHAA has partnered with NH Outright to organize an art class specifically for LGBTQIA+ youth. As part of this ongoing collaboration, both organizations continue to develop educational programs designed to empower queer teen artists across the Seacoast region. This year’s project, titled {Un}Mask, features papier mache masks. These masks are not meant to hide, they’re meant to reveal. Under the guidance of Cara Cabral, MSW Intern at NH Outright, and Evelyn Mauchly, art teacher at the Monarch School. Each student was encouraged to explore their identities and create a sculptural mask that proudly expresses their authentic self. The resulting works will be exhibited in the main gallery as part of Transcendence, offering young voices a platform to take up space and refuse to be erased. Join us in celebrating these brave young artists!
Artist Solo Shows
Be Not Afraid: The Divinity of Queer Community by Jaime Wing, woodblock prints
Be Not Afraid fuses the familiar rituals of Western religion with unapologetically queer symbolism. In his first solo exhibition, Portland, Maine-based artist Jaime Wing harnesses the expressive power of woodblock printing to explore themes of queer identity, spirituality, and collective strength. A member of Pickwick Independent Press, a community print shop in Portland, Wing creates striking, reverent works that invite reflection and celebration. Be Not Afraid invites queer viewers into a space of visibility and affirmation; one where they are not only seen, but sanctified. The New Hampshire Art Association is proud to present this bold debut.
ICONS by Darren Taylor; painting/mixed media
After a near sold-out exhibition last summer, Darren Taylor is back at NHAA with ICONS. This new exhibition invites viewers to lean in, literally and figuratively, to the lives of cultural giants. Through striking, mixed-media portraiture, Taylor captures the essence of influential figures, both contemporary and historical, while peeling back the glossy myth to reveal the human complexities beneath.
Seasons by Madison Albanese; photography, drawing, mixed media, projection
In her first solo exhibition since graduating from the University of New Hampshire, artist Madison Albanese invites viewers into an intimate and immersive meditation on memory, impermanence, and emotional transformation. Seasons—a body of work shaped by a lifelong fascination with image-making draws from a personal archive of film and video that began with childhood experiments using a Strawberry Shortcake 35mm camera. Through layered visuals and tactile sensibility, Albanese pieces together fragments of lived experience, evoking a powerful sense of nostalgia and emotional resonance.
All exhibitions will be on view at Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, 136 State Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801, from June 4th to June 29th, with an opening reception on June 6th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. This month, NHAA will host two artist talks that are free and open to the public. Jaime Wing will discuss his printmaking process on June 8th from 1 pm-2:30 pm. Madison Albanese will dive into her inspirations and process for creating multimedia works on June 28th from 1-2:30 pm.
