  • December 2021 - Germeroth Consulting + Creative

Shane Brewer of First Seacoast Bank with Lee Germeroth and Chamber President Ben VanCampLooking at Lee Germeroth, you might think he's quite serious.

And he is: He's seriously competent and knowledgable about web design, SEO and email as part of his career--head of Germeroth Consulting + Creative.

And, having known Lee for most of the five years or so he's been with the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth, we can tell you he's quite a Chamber member too. He's the kind of member who has participated with greater and greater frequency, working his way into one of the two business networking groups within the Chamber—the Connect & Collaborate groups--and also serving as a Chamber Ambassador.

Nowadays, Lee will tell you he wants to collaborate with more sustainably-minded businesses. Ask him about 1% for the Planet, an international organization whose members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes. Or—better yet—watch this 2 minute video and he'll tell you about it.

Also, Lee takes terrific photographs, and can fashion items out of leather and steel. But that's neither here nor there, and just further shows how seriously neat it is to get to know Lee. We'd recommend it.

In the photo to the right:  Shane Brewer of First Seacoast Bank, Lee Germeroth and Chamber President & Chief Collaborator Ben VanCamp.

  • November 2021 - Calling All Cargo Moving & Storage

Calling All Cargo Team Members with Shane Brewer of First Seacoast Bank and Chamber President Ben VanCampA moving company that started on a card table in an apartment in Dover has now expanded to the Eastern Seaboard. Mike Carlton, president of Calling All Cargo Moving & Storage has added two tractor-trailers to his fleet to help transport anything and everything from their Dover and Greenland facilities all the way to their brand-new branch in West Palm Beach, Fla. (a city that he now calls home.)

Carlton is proud of his company, and also very proud of his military background as a U.S. Marine—actively recruiting and hiring veterans to work for him whenever possible.

Community service is also very important to Carlton and co. They’ve got a heckofa history of transporting evergreens for the Dover chamber’s Festival of Trees many years running. Carlton also was entered into a community contest that required he dance a ballet with a former prima ballerina for Boston Ballet Company. (They won.)

Winning seems to be in the cards for Calling All Cargo. Their philosophy involves hustling, working hard, no smoking (no smoke breaks!) and giving back to the community.

A hearty congratulations to Calling All Cargo—our Small but Mighty Business of the Month!

In the photo to the right:  Shane Brewer of First Seacoast Bank, Teamember (name coming soon), Mike Carlton, and Joshua Leonard of Calling All Cargo, and Chamber President & Chief Collaborator Ben VanCamp.

Photograph of Seacoast SCORE representatives with Chamber President Ben VanCampWhen Steven Goldberg, Seacoast SCORE's Chair and Ira Hoffman, Seacoast SCORE's Vice Chair and Kiska Alexandropoulos, Chapter Administrator, greet us at their 230 Commercial Way office, they're quick to point out that technically, Seacoast SCORE is not a business.

But—we told them they are MIGHTY great at serving the Seacoast and their programs have a terrific ripple effect on local and regional businesses, so they are this month's Small but MIGHTY Award recipients! What Seacoast SCORE is is an organization (and a pretty terrific one at that.)

If you're in business on the Seacoast, you have most likely heard of Seacoast SCORE, which has been serving the New Hampshire, southern Maine, and northern Massachusetts Seacoast since 1964. Someone you know may have even used and enjoyed their services. You may even be friends with some of the business minds manning the shop (no--it's not a shop either!)

See what they might be able to offer you at https://seacoast.score.org/. They love to help, and are definitely knowledgeable. Scan the mentor list here.

A hearty congratulations to Seacoast SCORE--our Small but Mighty Business of the Month! Thanks to First Seacoast Bank First for sponsoring the award each month, and please -- nominate a business for consideration!

  • August 2020 - Kilwins

When you walk into Kilwins, the chocolate, fudge and ice cream shop, smack dab in the heart of Portsmouth's Market Square, the smell of chocolate takes over. The Desmonds would have it no other way. After all, chocolate is the mainstay of the business.

But there's a thing or two about this Small but MIGHTY Business for the month of September that go beyond its sweet smell. From special deliveries to community-driven pandemic help (touchless thermometers, anyone?) We'll let the video of Janette and her son John speak for itself. The faces of the children in the shop speak volumes as well!

February 2020 - Cornerstone Artisanal Pizza & Craft Beer

Cornerstone West End (Cornerstone Artisanal Pizza & Craft Beer) is big, beautiful and has great taste. You can see it in the décor in the Frank Jones Brewyard location, and the tasty mix of pizza toppings (plus the 24 curated craft beers on tap.)

Meeting owner Michael Cavaretta, you also get a sense of the business’ philanthropy, they host Community Nights with Brixham Montessori School in York, Maine – where any child who orders off the children's menu will eat for free and the cost of that meal will be donated to Brixham. And – on a much larger scale, Cornerstone recently partnered with Gather (formerly the Seacoast Food Pantry), Red Post Reality and Smuttynose Brewing to raise funds to provide 20,000 meals for people in need.

  • January 2020 - WSCA

WSCA might only have a *100-watt signal but it pulses with the beating hearts of 40 disc jockeys every week. With programming ranging from Audio Theatre to the Voodoo Tiki Lounge, they've got variety, and everything--including a show called The Kitchen Sink (featuring underground rock 'n' roll music: punk rock, post-punk, power pop, indie rock & pop, garage, glam, rockabilly, ska, alternative country and... you get the idea!)
While culture looms large at the station, budgets remain small: WSCA 106.1 FM, Portsmouth Community Radio is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization that holds the FCC broadcast license for 106.1 FM WSCA-LP in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is 100 percent listener funded by donors with local businesses contributing through underwriting. WSCA does not receive any government funding or grants.
So please, tune in to WSCA at 106.1 on your FM dial. *That 100-watt signal comes in clear from the Hampton tolls to the York, Maine tolls, to the Rochester tolls, Durham and all of greater Portsmouth. You can also stream and visit them at https://wscafm.org/. Another option? Catch a live show on their Button Factory Stage. Learn about the WSCA radio app, too! Cheers to Portsmouth's community radio station--our Small but Mighty Business of the Month! Thanks to First Seacoast Bank for sponsoring the award each month, and please -- nominate a business for consideration!

  • December 2019 - Malloy Events

With a style all their own, and a flair for the dramatic (when the situation calls for it), Kate and Chris Malloy lead a small but mighty crew (15 and growing!) at Malloy Events corporate event production and design. They were the folks that set the ski lodge scene for our Après Ski holiday party and will be beautifying backdrops and prepping podiums for many politicians this primary season (it's kind of their specialty.) Malloy Events has produced corporate conferences across the U.S., planned political rallies for 5,000 people, designed more than 500 weddings, and worked with countless non-profits on fundraising galas. Let's just say, they keep busy in the most eye-opening ways. Here's to Malloy Events, our Small but Mighty Business of the month! Thanks to First Seacoast Bank for sponsoring the award each month, and please -- nominate a business for consideration!

  • November 2019 - Hazel Boutique

To find oodles (that's more than 80) styles of women's clothing, look no further than down the sweetest alley in Portsmouth--Commercial Alley. Be it the perfect cashmere scarf, jewelry hand crafted from area beach stones, or a dress with just the right fabric and zippers (XCVI anyone?) -- you'll find it at Hazel Boutique. Owner Kerry LaJoie touts the great variety of styles, shapes and colors along with "fun gifty items." The store is so fun to browse and includes a sign with a great motto to shop by: "Life is short--Buy the dress."

While you can visit the store's website to learn more about LaJoie, the VIP Parties or simply the designers carried at Hazel Bourtique, honestly, the best way to learn is to take a short stroll down a little alley in Portsmouth. You'll be in for a big wonderful surprise.

Small but MIGHTY Business of the Month is sponsored by First Seacoast Bank.

Do you know a business that is Small but Mighty? Nominate them in the link below.

  • October 2019 - Take Flight

Take Flight Aerial Adventure Park, October's Small but Mighty Business of the month, knows about always reaching for the next rung.

Located on the border of New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine, Take Flight is at the top of the area Things-to-Do list. With an Aerial Adventure Challenge Course with more than 65 activities and elements for you to climb on, over, around, and through, owner Charlie Williams says, "Be prepared to get a good workout and have a lot of fun."

We give big props to Take Flight, which VP of Operations Sarah Derick says in its eighth season features more zip lines, more programming and more adventure opportunities than ever.

We love that First Seacoast Bank has offered the October Small but Mighty Business Award to Take Flight, and we love that T.F. staff will turn into zombies right before their season ends. (Take a Zombie Zip Tour offered Oct. 25 and 26 and Oct. 30 from 7 to 10 p.m.) We look forward to zooming with them next year!

  • September 2019 - Ohana

Ohana may mean family in the Hawaiian language, but around the Seacoast of New Hampshire, it means healthy—wholesome—yummy lunches and dinners. And it’s meant that ever since December 2017, when Jay and Stacy Krecklow opened their poké bowl hot spot in Portsmouth.

Since then, the Krecklows have branched out  to Exeter, and now Newburyport, Mass., but although they’ve expanded, they’ve kept their honest essence intact: Great lunches and dinners for fish lovers (and even those that don’t indulge in fish.)

The Ohana website states: "Ohana Kitchen was formed from a love of poké, a passion for fresh, healthy food, and a desire to share a piece of Hawaiian culture with our seacoast community." What's not to love?

We’re so glad Ohana calls the Seacoast home and can’t wait to see where this Small but Mighty Business goes next (although they’re certainly allowed to catch their breath for a while!)

The Small but Mighty Business of the month is sponsored by First Seacoast Bank, formerly Federal Savings Bank. Thanks, guys!

  • July 2019 - The Groomsmith

If you look up the word dapper in the dictionary, don't be surprised if you see a photo of the gents of The Groomsmith.  Starting from their grand opening on Oct. 27, 2018, the 28 Deer St. business in Portsmouth has worn its philanthropy on its barbershop sleeve. The opening event not only welcomed the community to the newest barbershop, but all proceeds from haircuts benefited the Chase Home, a nonprofit agency for youths. This is but one of the reasons The Groomsmith has been chosen the Small but Mighty Business of the Month sponsored by First Seacoast Bank.

In addition, The Groomsmith also occasionally cuts the hair for residents of Cross Roads House, Inc. – taking away something that could be a hassle, and turning their haircut into something special.

Cheers to The Groomsmith--truly a cut above.

  • June 2019 - EXP Realty

Connie and Bill Dolloff pride themselves on not only being top notch realtors with eXp Realty, but they also aim to be excellent real people as well. In fact, go to their website, and you'll not only learn about our local region and good information for first-time home buyers, but oodles more. How about: Homes for Heroes, it's What you Deserve? Or Military Members Moving, Transferring or Retiring to New Hampshire? The Dolloffs know a lot about a lot, and serving those that have served our country is one of their specialties. And one of their favorite programs you just have to ask them about is Homes for Heroes. According to their website, "Homes for Heroes was established shortly following the tragic events of 9/11 as a way to give back and say 'Thank You' to our nation’s heroes, firefighters, law enforcement, military (active, reserves and veterans), healthcare workers, EMS and teachers. When heroes work with Homes for Heroes affiliate real estate specialists, they receive Hero Rewards® which saves significant money when buying, selling or refinancing a home."

That's why the month of June's Small but Mighty Business of the Month Award sponsored by Federal Savings Bank, goes to eXp Realty (aka Connie and Bill Dolloff).

  • May 2019 - Liars Bench Beer Co.

In the home of a former plumbing supply warehouse down on Islington Street, you'll find Liars Bench Beer Co. Not only are they small and mighty but they're young and ambitious as well. And they know how to throw a celebration (case in point, their third anniversary celebration on May 26.)

But it's not all about brewing tasty adult beverages in a cool atmosphere (though that's a lot of it)--the folks at Liars Bench also give back. And, they are the Small but Mighty Business of the Month sponsored by Federal Savings Bank.

You'll find co-owners Dagan Migirditch and Dane Nielsen and their crew giving time and energy to the Blue Ocean Society, Planned Parenthood and the Coastal Conservation Association of NH, among many lucky recipients.

If we listed all the fun these folks had, the newsletter would fill your inbox to bursting. Here's a description of the last Oysterpalooza, which was held at their spot: "A raucous celebration of NH's Great Bay and its bounty and a benefit for the Coastal Conservation Conservation Association. Complete with the NH State Oyster Shucking Competition." Fun.

Cheers to Dane and Dagan and the little brewery that packs a wallop-- the Small but Mighty Liars Bench!

  • April 2019 - Hero Pups

The Small but Mighty Award for April, sponsored by Federal Savings Bank, goes to an organization that does good in multiple ways, and looks adorable doing it: Hero Pups. (Also, the founder of Hero Pups is named Laura Barker. We had to say that--sorry!)

Hero Pups combines two things most everyone loves: Heroes and pups. According to its website, Hero Pups primarily places pups with veterans and first responders. "Our focus is on those who are dealing with post traumatic stress (PTSD), anxiety and service-connected challenges. By using shelter and rescue pups whenever possible, we are able to help relieve the symptoms while helping a rescue pup in the process." Hero Pups is no stranger to accolades or press, so definitely cruise around their website under news & events (such as the pups' March appearance on TV featuring the NH inmates who are raising them). And, if you're feeling philanthropic, check out the ways to give to this 501-C-3 CHARITY.

Even if Laura Barker hadn't shown up for the award ceremony with her celebrity lab Liberty in tow, we would have been proud to give her the Small but Mighty plaque. (But what a bonus to have three (3) dogs for the photo op!) Here's to Hero Pups, and the woman behind them all!

  • March 2019 - Portsmouth Eats

Portsmouth Eats LogoPortsmouth Eats offers tours with tempting titles such as the Sweet and Savory Tour, Best of Portsmouth Walking and Tasting Tour and the White Table Cloth Culinary Tour. Their site spells it all out for you, and says, "On your own, you might miss something, but with Portsmouth Eats, we will show you around as our guest.  We'll introduce you to the top chefs and they will treat you to fine dining and delicious tastings.  We'll guide you through a city with a firm place in American history.  You can ask us anything about visiting and touring Portsmouth, because we are here to help make your trip a pleasant and delicious experience."

In addition, Colleen is director of events and marketing for the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce. Her path sometimes meshes with the tourism contingent at the Chamber Collaborative--for instance, she shared a booth with the Chamber at the NY Times Travel show in January and will also be sharing a booth with them at the Dream Destinations trade show in Springfield, Mass on April 28. Colleen attended Le Cordon Bleu, taking gastronomic tourism classes. Her son is a senior at UNH, double majoring in EcoGastronomy and mechanical engineering.

Plus, we have it on good authority that Colleen is extremely witty, loves to travel and is a foodie of the highest order. (Which dovetails nicely with Portsmouth Eats, don't you think?)

  • February 2019 - Children's Museum of New Hampshire

If we’re taking the title of this award literally, the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire has it covered. After all, children are nothing if not small and mighty. But the February Small but Mighty Business of the Month award sponsored by Federal Savings Bank also qualifies in myriad other ways.

Despite catering to mostly those under 4’ in stature, the museum--which opened in Portsmouth in 1983 and moved to its current Dover location in 2008-- packs a tall wallop with numbers such as: Number of visitors first year in Portsmouth, N.H.: 22,000; Number of annual visitors at Dover location: 93,000; Square feet in Portsmouth, N.H. location: 4,000 and Square feet in Dover, N.H. location: 16,000.

No matter how you look at it, The Children's Museum of New Hampshire under the watchful eye of president and education director Jane Bard, has flourished!
