A gift of $10 will sponsor one Portsmouth 3rd Grader for one classroom session of our special supplementary school program on Portsmouth history.

Our one school program is the Third Grade Portsmouth History Program, which we run in conjunction with Portsmouth's public schools. Our museum educator brings local history---through objects, stories, and interactives--into each of the 3rd grade classrooms of all three public schools over the course of nine visits throughout the school year, culminating in a field trip to the John Paul Jones House. During Covid times, these classroom visits are offered through outdoor presentations under tents, and over Zoom as necessary. This program is designed to supplement the social studies curriculum currently in place. Our traditional sponsors, whose support allows us to provide the program at free or discounted cost to the schools, have pivoted their focus in 2020/2021 to critical Covid-related needs this year. But we still feel that the normalcy, education, and importance of learning local history is crucial in these unusual times. Can you help?

Portsmouth Historical Society, founded in 1917, is a nonprofit devoted to championing the history, arts, and culture of the Portsmouth region through acquisitions, preservation, museum exhibitions, programs, and publications. It operates two facilities: Discover Portsmouth and the 1758 John Paul Jones House Museum and Garden, a national historic landmark.
